Windows 11 was launched last October and we are still learning to get to grips with the latest operating system (OS) from Microsoft. However, the transition from Windows 10 to 11 was not seamless.
Some people who upgraded to Windows 11 on their laptops had a driver issue that hogged all of their system memory, crippling things. Tap or click here to view our report and some possible fixes.
Windows Security is built into the operating system and includes antivirus program, firewall, malware protection, and other security tools to protect your PC. It is important to have all this protection. So what do you do when Windows breaks its security application? We’ll show you how to fix it.
Here is the backstory
We understand that new software usually has bugs. Operating systems are huge, complex programs where so much can go wrong. That’s why developers are constantly releasing updates to improve performance and fix issues.
A little bug here and there is a given, but that’s another thing. People are reporting that they cannot open Windows Security through Windows 11. And Windows 10 users who have upgraded are facing the same problem.
If you want to use a third-party antivirus program (more on this below), you need to disable Windows Defender, the antivirus program built into the Security app. Guess what? You won’t be able to turn it off if you can’t open the Security app, to begin with.
You may get the following error: You will need a new app to open this Windows Defender link. No, you don’t need a new Microsoft Store app. It’s a bug.

There are a few solutions to this problem. We’ll break it down for you.
Update Windows 11
Windows update is essential to protect against security threats. In this case, it can also solve the problems you are having. Here’s how to update Windows 11:
- Go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
- If an update is available, select Download and install now.
Restart your PC and try to open the Security app. If it still doesn’t work, go to the next step.
Repair or Reset Windows Security
You can fix some apps and programs if they aren’t working properly. Let’s try with Windows security:
- Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & Features.
- Select the three points icon next to Windows Security.
- Select the Advanced options link, then press Repair if available.
- If that doesn’t solve the problem, try Reset.
If you’re still having trouble with Windows security, there’s still a fix to try.
Windows PowerShell replaces the command prompt you may have used in older versions of Windows. You can use the Terminal to run commands to troubleshoot or repair issues with your PC.
You will need to run PowerShell as administrator before you can try the fix. Follow these steps:
- press the Victory key + S and type PowerShell in the search field.
- Right click WindowsPowerShell and select Execute as administrator.
- Click on Yes on the User Account Control (UAC prompt).
- Copy and paste this script at the command prompt: Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage.
- Hit Walk in to execute the command.
One of the three fixes we’ve outlined here should resolve your Windows security issues. Once you are done, you can try installing another antivirus program to replace Windows Defender.
