There are a lot of budding game designers out there these days, many of whom are creating phenomenal games with minimal tools. Just look The door of death – a game developed by two people which is currently being talked about. That being said, Microsoft wants to actively encourage more people to get into game development and, therefore, is making its Game Development Kit (GDK) free for everyone to download.
The software, which is made available on GitHub, is said to be “the same core development kit used by hundreds of game makers today and was previously only available to approved partners building for the Xbox ecosystem.” It comes with everything a developer needs, including the ability to add Xbox ecosystem features like Achievements and Multiplayer.
By using the GDK, creators will get a head start on their game’s development based on a technical basis that will also allow them to unlock features to integrate into the Xbox ecosystem like trading, achievements, multiplayer and more. again.
For creators who want to get their games from the Microsoft Store, they will still need to follow the usual steps in the [email protected] program. This involves “applying for an Xbox partner program, signing a license agreement, and setting up game services.”
Microsoft adds that its “mission is to democratize game development to generate a diverse and rich portfolio of content that our game audiences will love, and to create opportunities for all communities to share their stories through games.” It’s a big step in the right direction, making the tools readily available to those who wish to pursue a career in game development, potentially creating “the next big game” on the Xbox platform.
