CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois (3-2-2) scored twice in the final 10 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw against Drake in its first conference game of the season.
“The girls played much stronger physically in the second half,” said the head coach Craig Robert said. “Today they showed doggedness and tenacity to get back into the game and win the goals.”
Both of Drake’s goals came in the first half. Brooke Davies kicked the scoring in the first 10 minutes, followed by Makenna Shepard who scored in the 38th minute to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
The Salukis got going in the second half, creating more offensive chances to go along with an improved defensive effort.
The odds would eventually lead to a goal for Southern Illinois in the 84th minute, as Sam Dodd scored his first goal of the season on a Liz Brechtel help make it a 2-1 game.
Back to the wall, the Salukis found the equalizer two minutes later thanks to Quinn Parks. Parks saw the ball fall on her inside the box and slotted it into the back of the net to complete the thrilling return.
“The team really got stronger in the last 25 minutes,” Roberts said. “We never gave up and we really wanted to win.”
The tie was Southern Illinois’ second this season, giving the team a 3-2-2 record after its 2022 Missouri Valley Conference opener.
With the result, the Salukis also extended their unbeaten streak to five games, going 3-0-2 in that span.
Southern Illinois will be on the road for their next game, which is at Belmont on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. in Nashville, Tennessee.
