Porter and Reese make top-15 at USATF Outdoor Championships


EUGENE, Oregon – Indiana State Sophomore Sweater Ryan Porter and former plane tree thrower Erin Reese placed in the top 15 in their respective events at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.

Porter, who was named an honorable mention All-American for the second straight season, placed 15th in the triple jump with a max mark of 12.49m (40-11.75) in his outdoor championship debut at the league. ‘USATF. Reese, who just completed her third season as a volunteer assistant coach at Indiana State while also competing professionally, finished 14th in the hammer throw with a max mark of 65.96m (216-05).

Porter became the 10th Sycamore in program history to earn multiple outdoor All-America honors. She concluded her second season in the top 10 in program history in the triple jump (second) and 100m hurdles (10th). She won the triple jump titles at the MVC Indoor and Outdoor Championships, while winning the long jump title at the Indoor Championships and earning all-conference honors in the 60m hurdles (indoor) and the 100m hurdles (outdoors). Porter was named MVC Indoor Championships Most Valuable Athlete, MVC Indoor Freshman of the Year, and MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She also won the MVC’s Elite 17 Award for Indoor and Outdoor Championships, which is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA who has scored at the championships.

Reese (2017-19) was a three-time All-American at Indiana State and was a national finalist in the hammer throw at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor National Championships. Five-time MVC Champion and four-time MVC’s Most Outstanding Field Athlete, she remains the Indiana State school record holder in the hammer throw and discus throw, while holding the top 10 marks in program history in the shot put (outside – ninth, inside – 10th) and shot put (second).

Indiana State was also represented at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships by a freshman Luigi Rivas, who competed in the 110m hurdles. For Rivas, the championships capped a first season that saw him earn all-conference honors during the outdoor season while also reaching the quarterfinals in the 110m hurdles in the NCAA East preliminary round. He finished the season in the top 10 in program history in the outdoor 110 m hurdles (seventh) and indoor 60 m hurdles (ninth).

The USATF Outdoor Championships marked the end of the 2021-22 season for Indiana State. The Sycamores won both MVC Indoor Track and Field Championships for the first time since 2015 and won the MVC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship for the first time since 2014.
