Jake Brydson named to athletics coaching staff

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Jake Bryson was named assistant coach for the Southern Illinois track and field program, director of track and field and cross country Richard Jones announced today. Brydson is the third addition to the athletics coaching staff and will oversee jumps. Brydson previously served as assistant athletic coach at Missouri State, a position he held from 2018 to 2022. Prior to joining the Bears, Brydson spent a season at the University of Oklahoma where he was a volunteer assistant coach who helped with vertical jumps, multi events and hurdles.

“To join the staff of Coach Jones and this program is truly an honor,” said Brydson. “The trophies and accolades speak for themselves. After learning more about this program and this university, I understand how they have been earned in the past. I hope that under the guidance of Coach Jones, we can continue the Saluki tradition. I’m incredibly excited to be a part of this pursuit.”

At Missouri State, Brydson coached five Missouri Valley Conference champions and six runners-up. He had three NCAA first-round qualifiers and guided 15 student-athletes to the podium at the MVC Championships. Brydson’s training group included all hurdlers, jumpers, throwers and combined events. In 2022, her group went 1, 2, 5 at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships in women’s javelin.

With Oklahoma, Brydson participated in day-to-day operations and training for vertical jumps, men’s hurdles and combined events. Vernon Turner jumped 2.33 yards, the best freshman mark, and was No. 4 all-time indoor in the NCAA. Brydson was also among two Big 12 individual champions in the 60m hurdles and outdoor high jump in Oklahoma.

From 2014 to 2017, Brydson coached at Westlake High School in Saratoga Springs, Utah. There he coached several athletes to the Utah 5A State Finals.

Brydson graduated from Utah Valley University in the spring of 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. He was part of three school record relays (4×1 and 4×4 indoor/outdoor) and five team championships. As a senior in 2013, Brydson finished in the top 10 at the GWC Indoor Championships in the 200m and long jump. During the outdoor season, Brydson won the 4x100m relay while placing in the top 10 in the 4×400, 200m and 400m at the GWC Outdoor Championships. Throughout his career, Brydson consistently finished in the top three in events such as the 4×400, 200m, 4×100 and jumping events, leading to a successful career as a varsity athlete.

Brydson has coach training certifications by the USTFCCCA Academy and is approved in the horizontal jumps, high jump, vault and specialist in combined events. He also has his ALTIS certifications in sprint hurdles, horizontal jumps, high jump and shot put/discus.
