Without a quick way to edit PDF, many users wonder how to combine two PDF files into one. Although it may seem a bit of a headache at first, you can rest assured that it will be easy to attach your PDFs. Most importantly, it can be done for free with the right tools.

It doesn’t matter whether you use a Windows computer or a Mac, but it’s hard to deny that macOS users find it a little easier when it comes to combining PDF files on a Mac. Windows users will need to download a third-party program to attach their PDFs, but Mac enthusiasts already have the right tool built into macOS.

How to merge PDF files on Windows
There are many reliable programs that allow you to merge two PDF files into one on Windows computer. While you can imagine yourself using the Combine PDF option frequently, most of these programs also have a paid option that allows you to unleash the full potential of the feature.
The easiest and fastest way to merge PDFs for free is to use Adobe’s free online tool. Simply drag the PDF files to the marked field, then combine and rearrange them as needed. However, Adobe Acrobat is normally a paid tool, so this free version isn’t as good as what you get if you actually pay for it – it’s as basic as it gets. The paid version offers a full range of PDF related tools and is probably the most secure option available. Unfortunately, it’s subscription-based with prices starting at $ 9.99 / month (via Adobe).
Another good free option is PDFsam Basic. This program allows you to combine, split, rotate and extract both individual pages and complete PDF files. PDFsam is a program that you must download and install, so you will not upload your private files to a third-party service. You can upgrade to PDFsam Enhanced if you like the free version.
Finally, if you are not interested in these two programs, you can try AnywaySoft’s PDF Merger & Splitter available on the Microsoft Store. Although it is a third-party application, it is free and simple to use, with a fairly intuitive interface.
How to Merge PDF Files on Mac
Everything you need to combine PDF files on a Mac is already installed as part of macOS, assuming you’re running macOS Catalina or later. Apple explains how to combine entire PDF files on its support website, as well as only parts of multiple PDF files.
To combine two PDFs in their entirety, open a PDF file in Preview mode. Then choose View, then Thumbnails; this will show you the individual page thumbnails in the sidebar. Choose the page after which you want to insert the second PDF document, then choose Edit, Insert and finally, Page from File. Select the second PDF of your choice and open it, adding it to your current document. Don’t forget to save by choosing File then Export as PDF.
As mentioned above, Apple also allows you to combine parts of PDF files with each other instead of merging the whole file. To do this, open the two PDF files you want to join in preview mode. Then choose Show, then Thumbnails in both documents. Hold down the Command key to select the thumbnails you want to combine with the second document, and release the key when you’ve selected them. Drag all the thumbnails you chose into the sidebar of the other PDF file and drop them where you want them to be in the merged document. As above, save by clicking File, then Export as PDF.
